Radiant Barrier Film
Radiant Barrier Film Insulation for DFW
What is a radiant barrier and why would you want one? Radiant barriers use thermal-reflective material with low emissivity to redirect heat energy away from the home. They can also reflect heat back in, helping conserve energy in the winter.
Radiant heat accounts for most heat gain in a home. When the sun beats down on your home, it’s primarily the sun’s radiant energy that heats up the exterior. The other forms of heat gain are conductive and convective heat, which is what your regular insulation helps reduce. Traditional insulation, however, won’t stop radiant heat gain. A radiant barrier made of thermal-reflective foil, on the other hand, can pretty much eliminate the transfer of radiant heat.
While radiant barriers are most effective in warmer environments with roofs that get a lot of sun, they can help reduce heating and cooling costs for any home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, radiant barriers can reduce cooling costs by 5-10%.
What Is Emissivity?
Emissivity refers to the ratio of heat energy radiated by a material compared to the heat energy radiated by a true black body at the same temperature.
A theoretical black object doesn’t reflect any light and has an emissivity value of 1 (e=1). The brighter and more reflective the material, the less emissivity it has. Since radiant barriers are highly reflective, they have a very low emissivity value (0.1 or less).
The lower the emissivity of the reflective material, the better it will be able to block radiant heat from entering or departing a dwelling. Keep in mind that radiant barriers don’t address conductive or convective heat, so traditional insulation on the attic floor is still required.
Radiant Barrier Benefits
- Takes up little room
- Non-carcinogenic and non-toxic
- Will not attract mold, mildew, or pests
- Does not degrade with time, although dust and dirt can reduce its effectiveness over time
- Reduces heat and cooling costs by 5-10%
