Signs You Need to Replace Your Insulation

While fall seems to be approaching the Dallas-Fort Worth area a little slowly, it’s never too early to make sure your home is ready for the colder months. One important way you can do this is by ensuring your insulation is doing its job in keeping your home’s temperature and moisture regulated. You also might want to consider replacing your insulation altogether. If you don’t know how gauge whether your home needs new insulation or not, don’t panic because the DFW Thermal team is here to help you out. This September, keep an eye out for these important signs you need to replace your insulation.

High Energy Bills

When your home lacks proper insulation, your energy bill is bound to take a hit. Appropriate insulation protects the conditioned air from leaking out of your home through any gaps and cracks. Leaks also cause the outdoor air and temperature to permeate your interior, making your HVAC system run for longer cycles in order to adequately cool or heat up your home. If you have seen a consistent spike in your energy bill in the past few years, you might be lacking in proper insulation. Either the insulation has deteriorated or, if you have blown-in insulation, it might have settled.

Leaky Attic

While there are several places in your home that should be well-insulated, the first place you should focus on is the attic. Since it is the highest point in your home, there is a greater likelihood of air escaping through your attic. Poor insulation in your attic specifically can result in significant loss of energy. It can also result in something known as the “stack effect” which is when indoor air escapes out of the upper level of the home while outdoor air gets sucked in from the lower level. Properly insulating your attic can save up to 20 percent on your home’s heating and cooling costs.

Make sure your attic has enough insulation by performing a visual inspection and finding the R-Value of your insulation.

Cold Ceilings and Walls

One of the signs you need to replace your insulation is finding the walls in your home to be cold. When you touch the interior ceilings, walls and floors, they should feel warm and dry. If the interior walls feel cold and damp, you don’thave enough insulation.

Hot and Cold Spots

Not only does insulation keep your home protected from the outdoor temperature, it also keeps the indoor temperature and airflow consistent throughout the house. However, if you notice that an area in your home is extremely hot or cold no matter what you do, there is a chance your insulation is not doing its job. Sometimes insulation settles in places a little more densely, leading to warmer spots. Other times, insulation thins out in certain places leading to insulation gaps and draftier spots.

Pests and animals such as squirrels, mice, raccoons and rats might find the insulation in your home rather comfy. This can be particularly harmful to your insulation due to the mess they could create and the further inconvenience they can cause by damaging your insulation. If you do a visual inspection and find animal feces, holes in your insulation and odd smells, there is a chance some critters have made your insulation their home.
