What is injection foam insulation?

Before diving into the installation process for injection foam, it is necessary to understand what injection foam is. Injection foam is a three-part resin that is formulated to be installed in enclosed cavities of existing walls. Before it sets, injection foam looks and feels much like shaving cream. But, after it cures, injection foam becomes a hard barrier against air flow.

The Injection Process

The installation process for injection foam varies only slightly between housing materials. The basic process is as follows:

Remove Section of Exterior Wall:

The first step in installation of injection foam is to remove the paneling, siding, or plaster of the home. Insulation technicians do this.

For most materials, the exterior is removed, then replaced after the foam is injected. For brick walls however, holes are drilled in the mortar joints, then later re-mortared.

Drill Holes:

After removing the exterior covering of your walls, insulation technicians will drill holes into each stud cavity in your walls.


The foam is then injected into the stud cavities via specialized guns. An insulation technician knows the cavity is filled by monitoring the time and by feeling for increasing pressure against the exterior wall.


The filled cavities are then plugged. Typically, these plugs are composed of Styrofoam, but for wood siding, they’re wooden.

Replace Section of Exterior Wall:

Once the plugs have been placed, your insulation technician replaces the material of your exterior wall. The ease of replacement will depend on what your exterior wall is made of. However, experienced insulation technicians will be able to replace bricks, paneling, siding, drywall, or plaster.

A common misconception about injection foam insulation is it will cause paneled walls to bow out and plaster walls to crack. While logical, these concerns are not well-founded. Any insulation technician worth their salt will know how to avoid these issues.  


Homeowners with plaster walls are often concerned about their walls’ ability to stand up to the pressure of injection foam. However, they have no reason for concern. Plaster walls are stronger than drywall and are less likely to crack.


Paneling is a more fickle material than plaster. However, for an experienced insulation technician, paneling presents little to no challenge. To ensure that the paneling is not damaged by the pressure of the foam, technicians simply use a more delicate technique when filling the stud cavities.
